Obama ushers in a feminist revolution in foreign policy and national security.

while we ‘next generation’ men recognize past and present inequalities and celebrate triumphs of equality, i hope that the prevalence of women in top positions does not strike us as noteworthy or unusual. that is, in the world view of the modern man we just as much expect a qualified woman to hold any position as a qualified man - and are surprised and will investigate situations where we see gender-based imbalances.

bigots of all stripes, but perhaps especially those prejudiced against > 50% of the world population by gender, need to grow up and get over it already.

two more thoughts:

(1) in selecting such a team, there are many qualified candidates. picking a group that will form a workable and successful team is tricky, but will likely involve selecting members from both genders. while an all-man or all-woman team could do very well, greater diversity (here, in gender) surely brings a broader set of skills to the table.

(2) while it is never acceptable to choose someone for a position simply because ‘one of them’ (whoever ‘they’ are) didn’t get the job last time, it does feel good and right that so many women are getting top positions this time round. blatant sexism and prejudice are the only reasons that “in the 318 total years those [high-ranking government] positions have been occupied, women have held them for 16”. (i haven’t confirmed these numbers from the linked article, but i think we can all agree that past inequalities in this regard have been vast.)
